Saints+Adrian is an ongoing research-creation project that started in 2009 and which investigates “new icons” for new contemporary needs.

While my interest in icons (both commercial and religious) was shaped by my academic studies in art history, theology, and phenomenology, my artistic vision stems from the experience of seeing people praying in Eastern Orthodox churches before the Byzantine icons I have painted. It is this latter direct experience with icons that drives my curiosity in the function of images to mediate the link between humans and divine dimensions. In Saints+Adrian, I do so by combining the Byzantine iconographic style and narratives with pop culture icons to rethink our spiritual interest in today’s commercialized visual culture.
